Pakistan will participate in an international conference being held in Bangkok this month to discuss future development of electronic identity cards.
National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) Chairman Brigadier Saleem Moin (Retd) is leaving for Bankok on Sunday to attend the international conference from December 6 to 9.
The Thailand's Foreign Affairs Ministry, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Asia Pacific Smart Card Association have jointly organised the 'Forum on Electronic Identity Documents.'
Delegates from some 40 countries will discuss future development of national smart ID cards in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation specifications and standards, a Nadra official said. The Authority has developed an integrated database, and issued more than 46 million computerised national identity cards (CNICs) as well as machine-readable passports, he added.
The introduction of electronic passport has minimised chances of fraud in travelling documents, and reduced deportation of Pakistanis by other countries to a great extent, the Nadra official said.
He said the Authority had been rated by ID World, an international magazine on information technology published from Belgium and Italy, as one of the main 30 IT companies in the world.
