Pakistan Muslim League (PML) Secretary General Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed said on Saturday the rule of law in Muslim world is not effective and urged for establishing an independent human rights commission within Islamic countries.
He was addressing a seminar on "Human Rights" organised by the Pakistan Muslim League on the eve of International Human Rights Day at its party secretariat.
Senator Mushahid said it is urgently needed to establish an independent human rights commission in the Muslim countries to address humanitarian issues.
He further said there is a dual standard prevailing in the world regarding rule of law, added laws are applicable only to the poor and destitute. "Either it is Guantanamo or Abu Gharaib, human rights are badly violated and people are being oppressed all over the world," he pointed out.
The senator said the world, particularly, the big powers should intervene to stop human rights violation in Palestine and Kashmir by differentiating between terrorism and freedom struggle.
Religious affairs minister Ejazul Haq said holy Prophet (PBUH) underlined fundamental human rights in his last sermon.
He said Islam calls for giving equal rights to each citizen in the society regardless of gender, sect and religion.
He also pointed out the world must resolve major political issues to ensure human rights.
Ejaz said cultural and religious values should be respected to maintain peace and stability.
Senator Akram Zaki said it is of paramount importance to educate the people about their basic rights and urged to make amendment in the basic laws.
"Besides, formulating laws and their amendment, their respect is also essential," he maintained.
The champions of international human rights are the major violators of the basic rights," he added.
The seminar was also addressed by Senator Tariq Azim, Nelofar Bakhtiar, Ishaq Dar and Akbar Maseh Gill.
