The opposition staged a token walkout from the National Assembly to protest against increasing trend of obscenity in electronic media productions.
The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) lawmakers registered the protest, spearheaded by their lady members and later joined by Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and some Pakistan Peoples' Party lawmakers.
Earlier, the MMA lady lawmakers demanded of the government to take measures to check rampant obscenity in the programmes of Pakistan Television and other private television channels.
It was for the first time since the present assembly came into being that the opposition members walked out of the House to lodge their protest over unbridled liberty given to the media.
Five MMA MNAs, Samia Raheel, Bilqees Saif, Aisha Munawar, Jamila Amjad and Dr Farida Siddiqui spoke on printing of obscene advertisements on Sui gas bills.
For raising the issue, they had already moved a calling attention notice that was entertained after the question hour. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources Mir Naseer Mengal assured the House that the occurrence was shameful and the ministry had already taken notice of it.
The lawmakers demanded of the government to hold an inquiry as to under whose permission, printing of such advertisements was allowed and then circulated.
