National Institute of Transportation (NIT) has been awarded a collaborative 850,000 dollars research grant for "Development of Guidelines for the Asphalt Pavement Recycling in Pakistan" a project jointly submitted by NIT and Michigan State University (MSU), USA.
Dr Tayyeb Akram, Dean NIT and Professor Dr Gibert Baladi of MSU are the joint principal investigators. The proposal was evaluated by National Academy of Sciences (NAS), USA and the project is jointly sponsored by Pakistan (HEC/MoS&T) and USAID. Project duration is three years and will commence from January 2006.
The promising approach of roadway recovery/recycling involves usage of existing roadway materials.
The development of indigenous guidelines for recycling asphalt pavements will help in improving condition of the existing highway infrastructure at much lesser cost and will, therefore, have immense environmental and economic impact. In pursuance to the objectives of the institute, faculty at National Institute of Transportation (NIT), a constituent institute of National University of Sciences and Technology (Nust) is committed to latest research and development. International collaborations and research linkages with contemporary institutes and universities are the hallmark of its efforts.
