The Senate Standing Committee on Food, Agriculture and Livestock has decided to discuss the state of affairs of livestock farming and marketing which is a major source of sustenance for poor in the rural areas of the country.
The 12 member committee is meeting in the Parliament House on Saturday next to deliberate upon the salient features of National Policy regarding marketing of livestock and their products with particular reference to slaughtering of livestock in and outside the slaughter houses.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Saturday that the committee had asked the Minfal to give a briefing about the WTO requirements in this regard with reference to the Devolution Plan 2001 and role of district, provincial and federal governments to check slaughtering of underage/diseased livestock and sale of meat in unhygienic environment to the public.
The committee has further asked the ministry to submit a report about the role of "strengthening of livestock services project" and the name and remuneration of the consultants and other functionaries of the project and their achievements.
The committee will also discuss the laws which require amendments to check violation of international and national laws during the marketing of livestock and their products all over the country.
