I am a 16-year-old O Levels student at one of the schools in the city. The city Nazim declared Friday December 16 to be a holiday for all schools in the city on account of Pakistan winning the cricket match against England.
This resulted in two consecutive days of school holidays on account of the match. The nazim may have the legal authority to close down the schools at his whim, but does he realise the harm his decision has inflicted on the students in terms of loss of valuable tuition time? Also, the announcement of such thoughtless decisions at the last moment create a lot of confusion and chaos.
Parents and students desperately try to contact their particular school in the morning to find out if the school is open or not.
The school telephone lines are always busy in such situations and it is almost impossible to connect. In the end, half the students end up going to the school because of the uncertainty and have to return home resulting in unnecessary loss of time and resources.
My father tells me that the City administration has got its priorities all wrong, their primary duty is to improve basic services like roads, sewerage, water which they are neglecting, and not to announce school and college holidays at the last moment for petty reasons. Are we going to have a holiday each time Pakistan will win a match?
I appeal to the authorities to refrain from such actions and to let us students concentrate on our studies.
