A transporters group on Wednesday rejected the strike call given by different opposition parties and demanded of the provincial government and law enforcement agencies to provide them security on strike day.
The opposition political parties including MMA, ARD and Imran Khan led Tehrik-e-Insaf has given a strike call for observing a nation-wide general strike on Friday (March 3).
Addressing a press conference here at Peshawar Press Club (PPC), Haji Ahsanullah, president All Pakistan United Transport Owners Association said that they are true Muslims and condemned the publishing of the blasphemous caricatures in the European and Scandinavian countries. However, he said that they support peaceful protest and would not play to the tune of the political motivated campaign of Qazi Hussain Ahmad led violent and arsonist drive of the religio-political alliance.
He announced dissociation from the scheduled general strike, saying that their transport would continue plying on roads not only on the provincial but also inter-provincial routes. He said that the provision of security to public and private properties was the duty of the provincial government and police and demanded of them to provide them security on the prescribed day.
Flanked by the office bearers of different transport association, Haji Ahsanullah, who is an active activist of the PML-Q held both provincial government and police responsible for damage arson incident on the occasion of February 15 traders announced strike. He alleged that provincial government and police now in a bid to hide their failure had registered cases against innocent transporters.
He said that the religio-political alliance has miserably failed in delivering to their constituents and after failure in their agitation campaign against federal government, they are misusing the people sentiments in the name of protest against the publication of the blasphemous caricatures.
Haji Ahsanullah asked the leadership of MMA to quit both NWFP and Balochistan governments if they are really interested in the protest against the blasphemous cartoons, saying that enjoying the perks and privileges of the government and carrying protest demonstrations are two different things.
The leader of the transport community demanded of the provincial government and police to ensure security for transporters on March 3 and withdrawal of anti-terrorism cases registered against the transporters. Otherwise, he said, transporters would launch a province-wide protest against the provincial government.
