A division bench of the Lahore High Court (Rawalpindi bench) has issued notices in a writ petition, challenging unopposed election of Barrister Wasim Sajjad of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) as Senator from the Federal capital area on technocrats seat.
Petitioner Mazhar Ali Chaudhry, advocate, rival candidate of the opposition, through his counsel Mian Abdur Rauf, has challenged the rejection of his nomination papers by the returning officer. The LHC division bench comprised Justice Mohammed Muzammil Khan and Justice Syed Shabbar Raza Rizvi.
During preliminary hearing, the petitioner's counsel cited the case of Sheikh Rafiq Ahmed, former Senator of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Speaker of Punjab Assembly in a Supreme Court judgement and Election Order 1977, declaring practising lawyers fell in the category of technocrats.
