Different political parties, religious groups and traders' bodies on Thursday organised separate protest demonstrations in Multan to condemn the publication of blasphemous caricatures in European newspapers and against the US president's visit to Pakistan.
Pakistan Muslim League (N) Women Wing, led by Begum Sultana Shaheen, Begum Shaheen Shafiq and others, staged a sit-in during the protest demonstration on Khanewal road. More than 200 participants chanted anti-US and anti Bush slogans.
However, Rangers did not allow them to move towards the main square. Later the leading women activists delivered speeches on the occasion to condemn the role of some European newspapers in the name of freedom of expression.
Shiites groups also staged a demonstration at Chowk Daulat gate, burnt tyres and blocked the road. The protestors burnt flags of US, Denmark, Norway and other states to protest the blasphemous sketches. City traders also organised a rally.
