After assurance by Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi that all those would be released who were wrongly arrested during blasphemy protests in the province recently, Punjab Opposition unanimously supported a resolution condemning blasphemy attempt by certain European newspapers in Punjab Assembly opening session here on Saturday.
Later on, a protest procession against blasphemy, led by the CM and Qasim Zia, leader of opposition in the assembly, was taken out in the premises of the assembly. Provincial ministers and legislators from both benches participated in it.
The chief minister in the assembly house castigated those elements who were involved in acts of destruction during blasphemy protests in Lahore.
He said that the provincial government had compensated by delivering 80 motorcycles to those persons whose bikes were destroyed in the protest by rowdy elements.
About the blasphemy material published in European papers in September, 2005 said that Pakistan government had taken very strict notice of it promptly.
He said representatives of the country abroad put the protest and concern to Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), UN General Assembly and other forums immediately.
The CM said that blasphemous material was intentionally published by papers of European origin.
Speaker Shaukat Mazari, who conducted the House, shouted slogans of Namoos-e-Rasalat and Allah-o-Akbar. The legislators showing their agony and grief on the blasphemy attempt also raised religious slogans.
Earlier, two new legislators, Mir Afzal PPPP and Basima Riaz of PML-Q, took oath in the assembly.
The House was later adjourned till 9:00 am on Monday, when election for four Senate seats will be held.
Qasim Zia also held a meeting of opposition parliamentary party prior to the opening of the assembly session. He briefed the opposition legislators about Senate election.
