The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) supports the announcement of the Punjab chief minister to help and provide subsidised sugar to poor strata of society.
The sugar mills in Punjab would be bearing a loss of Rs 110 million by selling sugar below the cost and 10,000 tonnes of sugar at Rs 25 per kg, a PSMA spokesman said here on Monday.
It may be noted that the production cost for each kg of sugar is ranging between Rs 38 and Rs 40 but still the sugar industry would like to help the Punjab government and not let the poor people hopes go down and shoulder the burden of the government, he added.
The spokesman also said the sugar industry has always been extending a gesture of patriotism whenever it is required and similar posture is being adopted now to second the chief minister's passion for helping the poorest of the poor in society.
He also pointed out that due to harassment amongst the sugar buyers which has been created by the CBR and the Monopoly Control Authority by asking for the National Tax Numbers (NTNs) and addresses of sugar buyers, no buyers have been coming to the mills for sugar purchase since February 5, 2006 till date.
He hoped that present decision of the Punjab government would bring desired relief to the poor in the society. He also assured the government of extending all out help in meeting the needs of poor people.
