Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan has said that Pakistan's exports have grown by 23 percent in last eight months and the country will easily achieve export target of $17 billion this year.
He was talking to newsmen after attending a high-level meeting, which reviewed progress on the arrangements for holding second Expo Pakistan 2006 scheduled from March 29 to April 2, at Karachi Expo Centre.
Humayun Akhtar expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements for holding this mega event and said this show would be better than last year.
Earlier, the vice-chairman Export Promotion Bureau at the 3rd meeting of the steering committee briefed the minister about the latest process on the Expo Pakistan 2006. Sindh Minister for Industries Adil Siddiqui, City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal and the members of the committee were present on this occasion.
It was decided in the meeting that the exhibition would be opened for general public on the last day. The entry fee of Rs 100 was fixed for the general public.
The meeting was told that the total expenditure for holding this event would be Rs 148 million.
The minister was told that 3350 guests, including 1500 from foreign countries , 1300 local guests and 350 exhibitors have confirmed their participation in the show while 964 rooms have been booked in major hotels to accommodate the guests.
It was told that a conference on investment and product workshops would also be held at the sidelines of the exhibition. Six memorandums of understanding will be signed between the buyers and Pakistani exporters at the show.
The total expenditures for holding this event are estimated at Rs 146 million, of which Rs 80 million will be received from Export Development Fund, Rs 45 million from sponsors and Rs 23 million from stall booking.
Later, a signing ceremony of the sponsors was held in the presence of the minister. The sponsors of the Expo Pakistan 2006 are included Habib Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, PIA, KPT, Nishat Group, State Life Insurance Corporation and PSO.
