Thirteen rebels were hanged in Iraq Thursday, a government official said. The insurgents had been sentenced for crimes including murder, rape, kidnappings and bombings, the official said on condition of anonymity. He declined to say where the executions had taken place, but said religious and judicial authorities had witnessed the hangings.
Three members of the Islamist group Ansar al-Sunna, which has links to al Qaeda, were hanged on September 1, the first executions to be carried out since Iraq reinstated death penalty in June 2004.
