The second meeting of Inter-Ministerial Committee, constituted by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to frame Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Policy-2006, held here on Friday under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Amanullah Khan Jadoon.
Addressing the meeting, Jadoon said measures would be devised to ensure availability of LPG at affordable price.
The meeting was told that the current production of 1600 tonnes LPG per day was insufficient to meet the demand, which at present is 4000 tonnes. The steps should be taken to bridge this gap by enhancing indigenous production and by import.
The meeting was informed that as a result of deregulation of petroleum sector by the government, the LPG industry registered 11.9 percent domestic and 11.6 percent commercial growth and the marketing companies operating in the country also increased from 16 to 42.
The meeting stressed Ogra to take strict action against the elements involved in LPG decanting menace and creating artificial shortage of the fuel. It was proposed that steps should be taken to ensure availability of LPG in the remote and in areas without gas at all seasons in order to save the precious trees from cutting.
The recommendations of the committee would be formulated in the draft LPG policy-2006 and submitted to the Cabinet for approval.
Federal Minister for Industries, Production and Special Initiatives Jehangir Khan Tareen, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Energy Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman Oil and Gas Regularity Authority (Ogra) Munir Ahmed, Member Gas Rashid Farooq, Director General Gas Saeedullah Shah and representatives from Central Board of Revenue and Planning Commission attended the meeting.
