The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has decided to strengthen and expand Cowasjee Earthquake Study Centre (CESC) at NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi.
In this regard, a project has been approved in HEC Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP) meeting. The HEC has designed the project to equip and strengthen the CESC with state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities for research and development work.
The project also aims at human recourse development through impart training under the department theme of Disaster Mitigation, because most recent AJK earthquake showed that the country has short of expertise in that area.
The other objectives of the project include development of national database and repository of information in the area of earthquake engineering and seismology and continuous monitoring of country's southern coastal belt where tri-junction of plates are formed.
Through the project a nation-wide network of string motion accelerograph and linking the network with other networks developed by Meteorological Department, Geological Survey of Pakistan, etc would be developed and quantitative about 100 students at post-graduate level and about 700 students in Undergraduate level will be benefited from this project.
