West Indian batsman Chris Gayle has been cleared of a contrary conduct charge arising from an incident on the first day of the first cricket Test against New Zealand in Auckland, match referee Mike Procter said on Saturday.
Gayle was the subject of a disciplinary hearing over his reaction on Thursday to a delivery from fast bowler Shane Bond in the West Indies' first innings.
The opener, on 23, appeared to spoon the ball off his glove to Jamie How in the gully. As the New Zealand fielders went up in an appeal, Gayle rubbed his forearm as if to indicate that the ball had hit him there.
He was given not out by umpire Rudi Koertzen and ending up scoring 25.
Gayle was reported by match officials Darryl Harper, Koertzen and Gary Baxter, and pleaded not guilty to conduct contrary to the spirit of the game. Procter accepted Gayle's explanation that his actions were not intended to influence the umpires in any way.
