Six treasury members of the ruling Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) in NWFP on Monday submitted a notice to the provincial assembly secretariat for bringing a vote of no-confidence motion against the deputy speaker.
The notice was delivered to provincial assembly secretariat by NWFP Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Malik Zafar Azam along with the Mutahidda Majlis-i-Amal's (MMA) MPAs Hamid Shah, Amanat Shah, Muzaffar Said, Mian Nadir Shah and Rehana Ismail.Copies of the notice are being expected to be distributed among the members of the provincial assembly on Tuesday.
The movers during the proceeding would request the Speaker to admit the notice for a debate to unseat Ikramullah Shahid from the post of deputy speaker. The speaker would then ask the House who would give their opinion by a show of hands. One-third votes are required for its admission. The NWFP assembly consists of 124 members.
In case of the admission of the given notice submitted with assembly secretariat, it would come for debate within seven days. The vote would be held through secret ballot. A simple majority would be needed to oust the deputy speaker. The deputy speaker was accused of floor crossing and voting against party nominees against the recently held Senate elections in the province, an allegation Ikramullah Shahid denied on several occasions.
It has a worth to mention here that despite having 23 members in the 124-member house of NWFP Assembly, PML-Q and allies in the federal government had succeeded in electing four Senators from the provincial legislature. The ruling MMA in the province was in alliance with opposition parties including PPP-Parliamentarian, ANP and PML-N.
The PPP-candidate Farhatullah Babar failed in re-election to the upper house as some of the party legislators did not vote for their own party nominee and preferred to vote for others.
