Secretary Information, Pakistan Muslim League, Senator Tariq Azeem on Monday condemned the objectionable behaviour of opposition in the Senate on the occasion of election of chairman and deputy chairman.
In a statement issued here on Monday, Senator Tariq Azeem said attitude of opposition member especially Senator Safdar Ali Abbasi in the Upper House of the Parliament was undemocratic unparliamentary and objectionable.
Senator Tariq Azeem said, "the treasury benches while respecting the democratic right of opposition to speak openly and freely on any issue, inside and outside the parliament, want to ensure that certain rules and regulations should be observed by all the members belonging to ruling and opposition benches.
Referring to the attitude of opposition and especially use of objectionable language by Senator Safdar Abbasi, he said, respect and honour of the Chairman was obligatory for every member.
Tariq Azeem said opposition's attitude was an endeavour to send wrong signals about democracy in Pakistan and is condemnable.
He said some of the opposition senators adopted impatient and arrogant attitude towards the chair.
Senator Azeem said on the day of election of chairman and deputy chairman, the discussion was confined to these elections only and opposition wanted to discuss other issues on the same, although they could debate these points on any other day.
He said for the last three years the opposition utilised their time in "desk thumping" and did not positively participate in the legislation and discussions in the parliament.
Senator Azeem said opposition senators while rushing to the Chair and abusing him, have violated the rules and regulations.
He said rule 219, should be applied to each and every member of the Upper House without any discrimination and who so ever violate it, should be punished.
Senator Azeem said Senate Chairman Muhammadmian Soomro was just saying that Sunday was only to discuss the elections of chairman and deputy chairman, therefore, the other points could be discussed on any other day, but the opposition made it matter of protest without any justification.
Referring to attitude of Sanaullah Baloch against Kamil Ali Agha, in a previous session of the Senate, Tariq Azeem said the treasury benches took it lightly as these were the remarks by a member against another member but now an opposition member has abused and used objectionable, abusive and derogatory language against the chairman, therefore, action should be taken against the member.
Tariq Azeem said the Opposition tried to generate hue and cry from a false reason and ruined the smooth and peaceful atmosphere in the House that prevailed during the election of chairman and the deputy chairman.
He said, "This act of the Opposition should not be taken lightly as they are bent upon doing such acts when they see democracy strengthening in the country."
Senator Tariq Azeem said the government would continue to strengthen the democracy despite negative politics of the opposition.
