The government is making all out efforts to provide basic amenities in small cities of the province with a view to lessen the huge influx of rural population into the big cities.
Punjab Minister for Housing and Urban Development Syed Ali Raza Gillani stated this while addressing the International Conference and Expo on 'Safe and Quality Buildings in Asia-Review of Practices', organised by the Development Times in collaboration with the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore's Civil Engineering Department here on Tuesday.
A large number of people from rural areas are shifting to big cities for earning their livelihood and educating their children which is putting burden on big cities, thus aggravating the civic problems, he added.
The government focussed on the development of towns and small cities, and spending huge amount on road infrastructure, supply of water, electricity, gas and other facilities at less developed areas so that people could be restrained from shifting to big cities, he maintained.
He further said that provision of health and educational facilities at the doorsteps of people, particularly, in the rural areas, was the top priority of government.
The Minister further said the government deliberating with stakeholders to finalise the construction policy so that safe and quality construction could be ensured.
Earlier, the moot Organising Committee Chairman Mian Fazal Ahmad apprised the participants of the objectives of the conference. He said the event would provide interaction between the private and public sector companies, experts, professionals and executives.
The recommendations compiled in the moot would help accelerate growth of the housing and urban development of areas and safe and quality building construction practices, he added.
