A one-day workshop is being organised on 'Autism spectrum disorder' at the Special Education and Training Center in Johar Town here on April 4, in which two child psychiatrists from UK will talk about autism and related behaviour problems.
Discussing the workshop with a group of teachers and psychologists, Dr Khalida Tareen, Professor Emeritus, King Edward Medical College, said that provision of mental health services for children was an urgent need, so that early identification of mental health problems and their treatment could be made possible, says a press release.
According to statistics, while children under 18 years of age comprise approximately 50 percent of the population of Pakistan, no satisfactory facilities are available for mental healthcare and treatment of these youngsters, she added.
Dr Tareen said that besides doctors and psychologists, parents too must have adequate awareness of mental problems or disorders in children so that they could be better equipped to deal with them.
She disclosed that the workshop on autism would include a question-answer session where the British experts would respond to questions from parents, teachers and doctors.
