While talking to Aaj markets, Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (Prgmea) zonal chief (South) Atiq Kochra said despite the surge in the global demand for readymade garments exports from Pakistan is on decline, which is due to inconsistency in government policies, higher utility and mark up rates, and labour productivity issues.
He said that focus is not on value added products, and Pakistan has become a raw material provider, like yarn and processed fabric, which should be available to local manufacturers on competitive rates. Other Asian countries like, China, India, Bangladesh are doing their optimal to support the sector and their cost of doing business is lower compared to Pakistan.
Kochra said that the government is taking necessary measures but the main issue is about timing. The Prgmea official said that when labour shortage was witnessed in the country a policy was drafted within weeks to addressed the issue, though need for the same could have felt earlier and should be addressed.
He said to run a system on ad hoc basis would produce different results than one with proper planning and added that the government should give incentives to garment industry and help in reducing cost of doing business.
