Millions of rupees funds of the Fishermen Co-operative Society (FCS) have been plundered, which were kept in the shape of special bonds in the accounts of the Society in the past.
However, no case was registered against these irregularities in the funds, which otherwise could have been utilised for the welfare of poor fishermen, a meeting of various representatives associations of fishermen observed on Friday.
The meeting, attended by elected FCS members, Haji Mohammad Younas, Mohammad Yaqoob Tayyab, Usman Lalwani, Habibullah, Habibullah Khan Niazi, and others discussed the problems faced by the fishermen, said the FCS statement.
The meeting was told that the Society was formed to undertake welfare work for fishermen and strive excellently for the betterment of fishermen in the past.
But, in the last few years, the interference by the Co-operative and the Fisheries Department pushed the Society into financial crisis as well as pending a number of fishermen welfare projects.
The meeting noted that problems are becoming more complicated due to non-election of the chairman and the vice chairman of the Society and dwelt at length the situation arising out of this problem.
The meeting also condemned the Marine Fisheries Department (MFD) for its failure on the pretext of issues related to European Union (EU). The meeting decided to request the President, the Prime Minister, the Sindh governor and the chief minister to direct the Co-operative and the Fisheries Department to mend their ways and refrain from interfering in the affairs of the Society, so that it can work for betterment of fishermen.
