Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) on Thursday issued a White Paper, highlighting the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi during the last 15 months.
A 10-page White Paper was issued by Jamaat-e-Islami on behalf of the MMA, expressing its grave concern over the present uncertain situation in Karachi.
Addressing a press conference at the cafeteria of the Parliament House, MMA leader Liaquat Baloch alleged that for the last three years, particularly during the last 15 months, Karachi was in the grip of sectarian killings, political assassinations, robberies and snatching of vehicles and mobile phones.
He alleged that the provincial government, especially Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was active in spreading violence in the city. "People are at the mercy of robbers, while the provincial government is engaged in providing security to such criminals," he added.
Giving details of the rising crime graph in the city, the MMA leader said that 676 people were killed during 2005, out of which 37 were political workers and 13 were police officials. In all 195 people were injured in 748 attacks, at least 745 people were abducted and 3,823 cases of robbery were reported. Besides, 3,595 vehicles and 5,232 bikes were snatched.
According to the White Paper, the crimes also continued in the first three months of the current year killing at least 97 innocent people, including 16 political workers and 11 police officials.
Baloch informed the media that Jamaat-e-Islami students in different universities and colleges were being tortured by the activists of All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation (APMSO) with the support of Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad and Home Minister Rauf Siddiqui. MQM has posted their workers in all the police stations as SHOs to crush the students of Jamaat-e-Islami, he claimed.
