Suspected Taleban rebels set a girls' school on fire in eastern Afghanistan in the latest attack on the war-battered country's education institutions, officials said Monday. "Enemies set fire to a girls school last (Sunday) night," provincial director of education department Aseerudin Hotak told AFP.
About 650 girls were studying in the school in Mihtarlam village in Laghman province and the fire destroyed classrooms, desks and chairs, books and other education facilities, Hotak said.
The official blamed the attack on the "enemies of Afghanistan" a term which is usually used by Afghan authorities to mean the remnants of the Taleban regime.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
In a similar incident unknown armed men set fire to some tents, which were used as classrooms for a primary school near south-eastern Khost city late Sunday, provincial governor Mirajudin Patan told AFP.
