Nurses are the backbone of any healthcare facility. The image of the nursing profession has to be uplifted and it is only possible by providing good education, adequate training and better career opportunities to the nurses.
This was stated by Sumaira Malik, Minister for Women Development and Youth Affairs at the celebrations of Post-International Nurses Day held at Shifa International Hospital here on Tuesday.
The minister extended her full support for improving the quality and scope of nursing in the country by better communication between the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Women Development, so that problems being faced by nurses can be effectively addressed.
"Every year, the International Nurses' Day is celebrated on May 12 as a token of love and respect for the great personality, Florence Nightingale, who elevated the profession of nursing and gave grace and honor to it," she said.
Shifa International Hospital celebrated the Post-International Nurses Day with zeal and fervor on Tuesday. The theme of the day was "safe staffing saves lives". There were entertainment segments, presentations, discussions and a poster competition to mark the importance of the day.
Chief operating officer of the hospital, Aziz Ahmed Jan said that Shifa has taken a stand on the honor, dignity and importance of nurses as not mere subordinates to the doctors but as equal colleagues.
"They are the administrators and heads of departments and have all the authority to take decisions. This step has restored their confidence and has helped them improve their analytical and professional skills."
Dr Manzoor ul Haq Qazi, medical director of the Hospital said that every healthcare facility runs by a system and nurses are the main pillar of this system without whom the concept of healthcare is incomplete.
Chief of Nursing at the hospital, Hadja Hadjirul gave an overview of the nursing profession in Pakistan in comparison with in her homeland Philippines.
