Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Tuesday said the government will further strengthen the local government system to improve the quality and standard of life of the people at the grassroots level.
Talking to Nazims from NWFP at the Prime Minister House, the Prime Minister said the local government system, introduced by President Pervez Musharraf, has taken roots in the country and has proved to be a success.
He said the district government system provides the foundation to the political edifice of the country by strengthening the federal and provincial level governments.
Shaukat said that the credit for the success of the local government system goes largely to the local counselors and Nazims who have shown great maturity and acumen in nurturing it.
He said Pakistan Muslim League (PML) is the true representative party of the people and said it needs to be further strengthened in every province to serve the people effectively.
He said the PML government was proud of its achievements and will contest the forthcoming general elections on the basis of its performance.
He said PML has successfully provided a stable and clean government, not seen for a long time in the country. He said that all essential elements of a democratic government including a functioning parliament, free press and independent judiciary were flourishing in the country.
The Prime Minister said for the first time in the country's history its parliament was poised to complete its full term, which he added was a sign of political maturity.
He said the economic recovery achieved by the country as a result of the success of its reforms agenda has enabled the government to divert unprecedented high funds to development schemes and the government was now trying to transfer the benefits of growth to the common man.
Shaukat said the PML government was not making empty slogans and will provide electricity and safe drinking water throughout the country by the year 2007.
He said government will allocate more funds for the Khushal Pakistan Programme under which more development projects like farm-to-market roads, rural roads, health and educational facilities and the provision of electricity will be initiated throughout the country.
The meeting was attended among others by Federal Minister for Political Affairs Engr. Amir Muqam, District Nazim Swat Jamal Nasir, District Nazim Shangla Dr Ebadullah, District Nazim Kohat Saith Gohar Saifullah, District Nazim Lucky Marwat Hamayum Saifullah, District Nazim Abbottabad Sardar Haider Zaman, District Nazim Mansehra Sardar Yousaf, District Nazim Charsada Baseer Khan, District Nazim Tank Riaz Khan Lundi, District Nazim D.I.
