The shop timings will be changed from June 15 whereby all shops will open in the morning and close at dusk. The decision was taken at a high level meeting held under the chairmanship of Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan in which various steps came under consideration for providing relief to people on account of power supply.
The Governor exhorted the KESC to increase its power generation and made it clear that adhoc measures being taken and getting power supplies from other sources were meant to provide relief to people. However, he emphasised the Corporation would have to work at fast track to streamline its system on permanent basis.
The Governor had summoned the concerned authorities to Governor House on Thursday taking notice of power suspensions in the city. City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, Managing Director Siemens Sohail Wajahat, KESC CEO and other officials attended the meeting.
It was decided that the steps taken would also be applicable on areas under Defence Housing Authority while streetlights would be kept shut in non-populated areas for the time being.
The Governor directed that load shedding should not be carried out in city's congested areas. However, if felt extremely necessary, the power suspension be resorted to with prior information. He praised the spirit of tolerance of Karachiites who, despite all hardships, understood the complications of the situation and showed patience.
The meeting was informed that as a result of ongoing projects for power availability, the situation will improve in the next three months and in the meantime efforts would continue for immediate relief through temporary measures. It was pointed out that once the situation returns to normal, the previous shop timings would be restored.
It was informed that during the first week of June, the peak demand would be for 2284 MW while KESC was producing 1136 MW out of its own resources and made 2084 MW available after receiving supplies from Wapda and other sources and thus a shortfall of 200 MW was faced which would be met through adhoc measures and ensuring supplies from Wapda. During the meeting, Governor also talked to Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi who assured required supplies by Wapda.
The Governor had an appraisal from concerned officials about power supply projects and short and long term programmes thereof. He directed that all those projects be carried out on fast track.
