Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Secretary General and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has said that no final decision has been taken yet from any forum regarding contesting the general elections, under the Musharraf regime.
However, any decision taken by the combined opposition, including the MMA would be acceptable to all, he pointed out at a news conference on Sunday.
JUI central secretary information Hafiz Riaz Durrani, Maulana Amjad Khan and other party leaders were also present on the occasion.
He also denied the news about his differences with MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed and said he would respect all the decisions of the MMA.
Commenting on the government performance, he said that the policies adopted by the rulers after 9/11 were proving risk for the country. When asked to comment on the 'Charter of Democracy', he said so far he had not gone through this document.
However, he pointed out that a meeting of the combined opposition would be held in the federal capital, where besides election of opposition leader in the Senate, charter of democracy and other issues would also come under discussion.
He further said that the ongoing resistance in Iraq was struggle for independence in the eyes of Muslims.
About North Waziristan situation, he said the forces had killed 15-20 innocent people recently while the government had declared them as 'terrorists'. During an earlier operation the government forces had martyred schoolboys ageing 13 to 17, he reacted.
He said the new NWFP governor had expressed his desire to maintain law and order in Fata, but it appeared some elements were not happy with this move.
According to him, withdrawal of forces was a prerequisite for the restoration of peace and tranquillity in NWFP and Balochistan provinces. MMA was ready to support the government on this issue but to achieve this objective it would have to strengthen the political system and empower the Jirga, he said.
"We understand that after 9/11, the government adopted wrong policies, which were endangering Pakistan. We will also have to make all efforts to maintain peace on our western border as it was the need of the hour."
Criticising the federal budget, MMA secretary general said that no relief had been provided to the common man in it, adding it would benefit only the ex-army men retiring before 1977.
About Pakistan's military capability, he said: "The nation had adjudged it on the issue of Kargil." To a question, he said that media was spreading baseless rumours about him regarding 18th Amendment and some other issues.
