Commission for South Asia and Asia Pacific of United Nations World Tourism Organisation has decided to hold their next meeting in Islamabad at the end of April, 2007.
This was disclosed by Salman Javed, Managing Director, Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation upon his return from Macau, Semi Autonomous region of China, says a press release issued on Thursday.
Salman Javed, who chaired the meeting of UNWTO's Commission for South Asia, stated that the decision to select Islamabad as the venue of its next meeting, by UNWTO was a recognition of the Government of Pakistan's commitment and appreciation of its policies for the promotion of tourism in Pakistan.
He disclosed that Japan and Iran were also contenders for holding the meeting, but Pakistan at the end got this honour as a result of unanimous decision by the member states of the UNWTO.
He hoped that all members of travel trade would rise to the occasion and demonstrate the traditional hospitality of Pakistani nation at the time of this historic meeting, to be held in April 2007.
Salman Javed had attended the meeting of UNWTO Commission for South Asia as well as represented Pakistan at the Roundtable of Tourism Ministers of South Asia and Pacific Regions held under the auspices of UNWTO at Macau. Talking to the media people he disclosed that the UNWTO Commission for South Asia reviewed various annual development plans as well as the growth in arrivals in the region.
It took steps for joint marketing and promotion of South Asia as a joint product both for inter-regional tourism as well as intra-regional tourism.
He said that the Roundtable of the Tourism Ministers of the Asia Pacific Region shared experiences in crisis management such as earthquake, epidemics and terrorism and resolved to continue exchanging ideas on desired actions to overcome and handle such crisis in the tourism sector.
It also discussed ways and means to promote eco-tourism. He further disclosed that the member countries stressed for the proper handling of travel advisories by the issuing countries in manner that it is least deterrent in the promotion of tourism.-PR
