The customs special judge, Karachi, on Monday would announce judgement on the bail application of Raja Zaraat, major suspect in the multimillion GST scam. Sources told Business Recorder on Sunday that the fate of Zaraat in the largest sales tax refund fraud case was likely to be announced by the court.
The Special Judge, Karachi, has heard detailed arguments on the bail application from both sides. The Directorate General of Customs, Intelligence and Investigation, Customs and Excise, is trying its level best to ensure custody of the accused to complete investigation in the case.
The Board has already rejected his application for out-of-court settlement through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). This application was filed last month, and Zaraat's counsel has informed the court that an ADR committee had been formed at the level of CBR for settlement of the issue, sources said.
The Board has rejected the ADR application on the grounds that criminal proceedings were already underway against the accused under various provisions of Customs Act, 1969 and an ADR committee cannot be formed in such a situation.
Last week, the Board had informed the judicial for a, including Sindh High Court, that no appeal of Zaraat for ARD was being heard at the CBR.
Sources said that presently the investigations are under way to confirm reports from UAE ports whether the Bawan Shah Group had actually made exports for availing huge amount of sales tax refund. It would confirm the fraudulent technique of 'paper shipment' committed by the company to show exports on paper only.
