The investors of Karachi Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) are worried and deeply perturbed due to interruption in power supply. Muhammad Younus Shaikh, Convenor, KEPZ Business Council, in a press release issued here on Monday said that for the last three days the supply of electricity has been subject to frequent breakdowns.
He said that the KEPZ enjoys exemption from the on-going load shedding. It is strange that Export Processing Zone Authority is maintaining its own grid station of 50 mega watts capacity, out of which only five mega watts is being consumed by the industries of the KEPZ. Thus, there is no justification for frequent breakdowns in the KEPZ area, he added.
He said that due to non-availability of power, investors are facing extreme difficulty in meeting their orders in time, which they have obtained after strenuous efforts. He said that export is the back-bone of every country, which requires special attention and care.
Muhammad Younus Shaikh said that on the contrary in the KEPZ the frequent power breakdowns are a source of extreme worry. "Our country cannot afford such breakdowns, as non-fulfilment of export commitments will result not only in a loss of precious foreign exchange for Pakistan, but the industries in the KEPZ may lose their present buyers instead of approaching export target.
He said that the KEPZ is one of the most important industrial areas in the country where more than 100 units are working while 200 acres of land have been sold where more units are being established. Al-Tuwairqi group is going to set up its industry in this area and a Hong Kong based group is also setting up its business in this area.-PR
