Five more factories at Sundar Industrial Estate (SIE) will be operational by July 30, bringing the total number of units in production to eight. "About 40 units are under construction these days; SIE will have a great impact on the national economy when hundreds of units will start production in the coming years," chairman Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company (PIE), Mohsin M. Syed told APP.
He said that most of the units being established at SIE represent pharmaceutical, textile and engineering sectors. Of these, 12 units are being set up by foreign companies, attracting huge foreign direct investment into Pakistan. He disclosed that a potato chips manufacturing unit was being set up by the world beverage giant, Pepsi International.
"The plant going into production by September this year will help stabilise the prices of potato crop in the country, especially in Okara and Sahiwal districts, which have been experiencing a glut problem over the last many years," said Mohsin Syed.
