Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad has asked the concerned officials to take fast-paced steps to set up four new Sabzi Mandis in Karachi. Addressing a meeting at Governor's House on Saturday evening, he said that by establishing more Sabzi Mandis the monopoly of middlemen and commission agents would be broken and the citizens would get fresh vegetables and fruits on proper rates.
He said that setting up of new vegetable markets would also help in smooth flow of traffic on city roads.
Governor addressed two different meetings and met with senior officers at the Governor's House.
He said that the government was taking steps to reduce poverty in the province, control price hike and provide more jobs to facilitate the masses.
He stressed on priority-based steps for implementation of police reforms and rooting out extremism from society in the light of the address to the nation of President General Pervez Musharraf.
He said that present government had taken practical steps to reduce poverty.
He stressed for an active role of consumers' rights bodies to take on profiteering and hoarding.
He asked for stern action against anti-social elements. He said that the extremism was foundation of terrorism, and to end it, all sections of the society had to take joint efforts.
He said that more job opportunities could be created by boosting trade and industrial activities in the province.
Meanwhile, a delegation of American Surgeons, which led by Hashmat Effendi, who heads US-based international organisation, the House of Charity, called on Ibad at Governor House.
The governor stressed the need for creating awareness at all levels for protection against accidental situations, particularly electrocution and burning incidents.
In this regard, he emphasised upon making the mothers aware about protective measures to protect children from such mishaps.
The team of US surgeons and experts is in Pakistan on a three-week visit and carrying out reconstruction surgeries in Karachi and Lahore and specially treating the children with burns.
The Governor appreciated such visits by American surgeons and the facilities of surgery being provided by them.
He expressed the hope that visiting surgeons and technicians would also benefit Pakistani staff with their experiences and expertise so that their mission continues even during their absence.
In this regard he also stressed on the utilisation of telemedicine.
The Governor spotlighted on increasing burns units in Karachi and equipping them with modern facilities. He said that besides government efforts, the philanthropists and organisations are also contributing towards this end.
In this regard he appreciated the efforts of Dow Medical University.
He reiterated the need for necessary awareness for providing immediate relief in cases of electric shocks, burns and other accidental mishaps and said this would save people from major losses.
The American surgeons described their visit to Karachi impressive and appreciated Pakistan's human force observing that they can face any challenge.
The delegation included Dr Deof William, Dr Michael E Schafer and others.
