Sri Lanka's air force bombed Tamil Tiger territory in the island's restive east on Wednesday, officials said, just hours after United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres visited the area.
Kfir fighter jets dropped bombs on rebel targets in the eastern district of Trincomalee amid a spat over water supplies, Air Force spokesman Group Captain Ajantha de Silva said. Guterres had already left the area.
The bombing raid is the latest in a series of attacks and clashes between the military and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that many fear could rupture a 2002 cease-fire and spiral into a new chapter of a two-decade civil war.
Guterres visited Trincomalee and met members of the LTTE in their northern stronghold of Kilinochchi to discuss humanitarian issues related to displaced people.
