The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) in consultation with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has chalked out quarter-wise revenue collection target for the fiscal year 2006-07.
Sources told Business Recorder on Tuesday the revenue collection target for the first half (July-December) of 2006-07 has been fixed at Rs 379.9 billion and second half (January-June) at Rs 455.1 billion to meet the annual target of Rs 835 billion.
Further bifurcation reveals that the target for first quarter (July-September) 2006-07 has been fixed at Rs 176.2 billion; second quarter (October-December), Rs 203.7 billion; third quarter (January-March), Rs 204.6 billion and the target for the fourth quarter (April-June) 2006-07 has been fixed at Rs 250.5 billion.
Sources said the prime minister has agreed with the quarter-wise targets and subsequently directed the CBR to ensure meeting these tax projections. The bifurcation of the annual target of Rs 835 billion was discussed threadbare by the prime minister and the tax managers during a meeting held last week.
They said the target has been fixed on the basis of taxation measures taken in budget envisaging estimated 20 percent growth in revenue. In the first quarter of 2006-07, the Board has so far collected Rs 40.9 billion in July 2006. It has to collect an amount of Rs 339 billion to meet the target set for first quarter of the current fiscal year.
Keeping in view the past trend, the target for first quarter has been fixed at Rs 176.2 billion, whereas highest amount of revenue collection of Rs 250.5 billion is projected during the last three months of the current fiscal.
In case the performance of domestic taxes remained consistent with strong domestic demand and the overall strength of the economy, the CBR would not find any difficulty in achieving 20 percent growth in revenue collection, sources added.
