A "lasting, permanent and sustainable" cease-fire is the need of the hour in Lebanon. Whilst the Middle East peace is actually hidden beneath the dust of history. Israel is a snake sitting on it twisting to bite the peace-seekers.
If Israel goes back to its position in 1967 and evacuates the land of the Arab territories so peace would take a new life and there would be no need of the US to become a socalled champion of the peace process. It has showed its cruel face by its speedy shipment of arms to Israel in these circumstances.
In fact, Tel Aviv has to return to the pre-1967 position for its own existence. If Israeli atrocities continue on the innocent civilians of Lebanon and Palestine there is a vital possibility of a full-scale war that may engulf the entire region.
Notably, if the peace process fails due to Israel's killing of innocent civilians in Lebanon there is no option except war.
It is a fact that Hezbollah is "a genuine Islamic movement whose progress should become an example for the Muslim world." In the meantime, a positive search for genuine peace should be a key component of the entire World.
The disarmament of Hezbollah, and the creation of a new international force that would be deployed in southern Lebanon, along with the Lebanese army, would not be possible without the consent of Syria, Iran and Hezbollah's leadership. It would be considered as a defeat for the Hezbollah movement and its backers in Syria and Iran. There would be difficulty in maintaining peace in the Middle East according to the Rome Conference.
The goals laid out in Rome would be difficult to achieve as they would be strongly resisted by the Hezbollah. Israel also seems too weak to control Hezbollah's attack on Israel. It's also not clear whether Israel's attempt to destroy Hezbollah's military capability will succeed.
In the recent context of the Middle East conflict and clashes between the Hezbollah Guerrillas and the Israeli army in the southern part of Lebanon, Washington was pulled into a diplomatic trap, putting pressure on the Bush administration to launch some sort of diplomatic initiative.
These calls sound reasonable; the loss of innocent lives in Lebanon and Israel is tragic, the dangers of further escalation are real and US shuttle diplomacy has been instrumental in halting previous conflicts. The United States is already engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan, the recent conflict of Middle East will divert its attention from the real tasks.
Even though the US dispatched its Secretary of State to see the possibilities of a cease-fire, there is no significant move for the war stopping immediately. Israel and the US are stuck to stop Hezbollah's rocket attacks on Israel. It is a fact that whenever a chaotic situation arises in the Middle East, Israel is the ultimate source of such events. Now, US wishes to redraw the Middle East map taking advantage of this situation.
