In collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), 1,323-km-long roads in 27 districts are being widened up to 20 to 24 feet at a cost of Rs 13.328 billion, while an amount of Rs 3.7 billion has been allocated in the current fiscal year for this purpose.
Punjab Communication and Work Minister Chaudhry Zaheer-ud-Din Khan stated this while presiding over a meeting here on Sunday. Communication and Work Secretary Ahmad Yar Khan and other senior officials also attended the meeting.
The minister also directed the C&W secretary to constitute survey teams comprising engineers and road experts to point out black spots and dangerous curves situated on provincial roads so that these could be removed immediately.
He was of the view that the ratio of road accidents could be minimised by removing the black-spots and dangerous curves from the roads.
He directed that a plan should be evolved to improve geometry of existing roads, and also directed the authorities to launch a comprehensive campaign in collaboration with the district governments and local police to remove encroachments from the inter-districts and other important roads.
The minister directed that road marking and traffic signboards should be displayed at roads on priority basis for the guidance of drivers.
He said the government is taking all possible measures to provide better and comfortable means of communication to people, adding that rural approach roads were being widened so that the farmers could supply their produce in the market in time.
