The opposition, after submitting its requisition with Sindh Assembly secretariat, is expecting that the government would ignore it and summon the session from Friday. Opposition MPAs said on Monday that it was seldom that the government accommodated the opposition giving it a chance to bring public grievances in the house for discussion.
The assembly record would show that the government had bulldozed hundreds of public interest adjournment motions, as it had nothing on record to show that it had done to bring relief to the people.
They said that law and order situation had deteriorated; prices had gone up; unemployment had increased; and lay-offs had been rampant in the province. They said that the urban-rural divide had widened and efforts to augment political divide and horse-trading were being encouraged.
There have been hectic efforts to buy out a few more MPAs from the PPP and offers were made to them through the 'turncoats' who have left PPP and joined the treasury and the Sindh cabinet, they said.
Reasons may be many, but observers say that PPP has a disgruntled group as the PPP central leader Qaim Ali Shah and the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, do not feel comfortable with each other.
The party lacks internal discipline, but is seemingly united, as those willing to part ways are not finding the right connection and right time to do so.
The treasury benches are likely to bring relief to them and to their people.
The government is likely to get tough with those against whom criminal cases have been registered by their rivals in their constituencies. "If this tactic succeeds, a few more would shift their loyalties," sources said.
The requisitioned session, if convened, chances of which the opposition itself has ruled out, would be stormy as many issues, including government highhandedness against opposition members would come up for discussion. Worsening law and order, recent rains across the province and poor performance of the government in dealing with rains' after-effects will come up for discussion.
Absence of any relief package for both rural and urban poor and the inefficiency of city district governments across the province to deal with situation arising out of rains have exposed the entire local government system are the issues that would also be highlighted.
The opposition has decided that the differences between the coalition partners should also be discussed as the event has crippled the administrative machinery of the government. The opposition is of the view that the differences between MQM and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim are not more than 'noora kushti' to divert attention of the people from the immediate issues of the people which are frequent power breakdowns in Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur, specially, and in general throughout Sindh. Unemployment and price increases in daily use articles are other issues. There is increase in street crimes, car thefts and cell phone snatching.
Government sources said that members of the opposition have exhausted their 'pocket money' and needed some funds, and it is for this reason they have requisitioned the session.
The government is always keen to summon the assembly session to carry out public interest legislative work but the opposition is not serious in any work.
