The situation arising after recent rains in Karachi and other parts of the province and the steps to be taken in the wake of possible flood threat were reviewed at a high level meeting held at Governor House on Monday with Governor Ishrat-ul-Ibad in the chair.
The Governor directed that steps be taken for timely shifting of people from coastal areas and districts which may be hit by flood to safer places. In Katcha areas, the Governor particularly stressed on activating the related departments.
Taking strict notice of water-logging of KPT underpass, he warned of punitive action against elements responsible of negligence and carelessness.
He made it clear that blocking the sewerage outlets is a criminal act, which cannot be tolerated. He directed that flows in the drains, which carry sewerage water Nahr-e-Khayyam, should be restored by working throughout the night by Tuesday morning.
Directives were also issued for draining out water from Gulshan-e-Faisal and Bath Island and initiating emergency steps for providing relief to people.
The meeting was told that Water Board had completed cleaning of 70 percent drains as a result of which situation remained relatively better as compared to previous years in the old areas which used to be affected by rains.
The meeting was attended by Advisor Local Government Waseem Akhtar, Principal Secretary Mohammad Saleem Khan, Relief Commissioner Syed Anwar Haider, Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal, Additional Chief Secretary Local Government Mirza Karim Baig and officials of water, electricity, gas, telephone, police, KPT, cantonment boards and other related departments.
