Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has said that the government is attaching top priority to poverty alleviation, removal of backwardness as well as provision of basic amenities in southern Punjab and besides provision of urban facilities in 21 tehsils of six districts of the region.
Southern Punjab Basic Urban Services Project is being speedily implemented in the area which has resulted in accelerating constructive activities besides provision of job opportunities to the citizens.
He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting here on Wednesday, which reviewed the pace of execution of Southern Punjab Basic Urban Services Project, disclosed an official.
Chairman Planning and Development Suleman Ghani, Secretary Local Government Akhlaq Ahmad Tarrar, Special Secretary Finance Azmat Ali Ranjha, Project Co-ordinator Bashir Ahmad Qureshi, Member Colonies Tariq Yousaf as well as other senior officers were also present.
The CM said that a revolutionary project of urban development has been started in 21 tehsils of six districts of Southern Punjab, including Bahawalpur, Ahmadpur Sharqia, Hasilpur, Yazman, Kherpur Tamiwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Taunsa, Khanewal, Kabirwala, Mian Channu, Jahanian, Multan City, Jalalpur Pirwala, Qadirpur Ran, Shujabad, Muzaffargarh, Alipur, Jatoi, Kot Addu, Rajanpur, Jampur and Rojhan.
"The project costing Rs 7.5 billion is aimed at improvement of water supply, drainage as well as sanitation system in the area. Water treatment plants are being installed and link roads are being constructed while solid waste management system is also being improved. The provincial government and tehsil municipal administration are implementing this project of provision of basic amenities in southern Punjab in a co-ordinated manner," he added.
According to him, the government would continue to provide more funds to Southern Punjab than the ratio of its population so as to ensure basic amenities to the citizens of this region.
The CM directed to further accelerate the pace of execution of Southern Punjab Basic Urban Services Project. Secretary Local Government, Akhlaq Ahmad Tarrar informed that 94 development schemes for 21 tehsils of southern Punjab have been approved.
