Central Board of Revenue (CBR) chairman Abdullah Yusuf has said in order to expedite clearance of export goods, a pilot project with the assistance of the United States would soon be initiated at the Port Qasim, which would be completed in a few months.
Addressing members of the Pakistan Bedwear Exporters Association here Thursday evening, he said the Integrated Cargo Container Control (IC3) programme would facilitate in reducing cost of scanning of cargoes destined to the United States and help control illegal transportation of arms, radioactive materials and narcotics.
Under this programme Pakistani goods would directly go to the US ports. Pakistan is the first country to implement IC3 programme in the region.
The CBR chief clarified no US customs official would be posted at the Karachi Port; however, they would see all containers and cargo screening at their respective offices in the US and added exporters would have to pay very nominal charges for this special clearance service.
He said the CBR would make all arrangements to enhance and make the trade corridor from dream into a reality, adding the KICT CARE project was a success example regarding the dream and in another few months the IC3 programme will be rolled out at PICT and QICT. This programme will reduce the 26-step procedure of clearance of goods into a one-step procedure, besides the interaction between exporters and customs officials would also be put to an end.
Abdullah Yusuf said the tax collection during the first quarter of the current fiscal was satisfactory and the target set by the government was achievable. "CVT on property gives us the result beyond our expectation and the theory behind levying of this tax to discourage speculators and encourage genuine buyers," he added.
