The new building of Post-Graduate Medical Institute (PGMI) would be constructed at Lahore General Hospital (LGH) at a cost of Rs 1,027.861 million PGMI LGH Principal Dr Sajjad Hussain, while giving details of the project at a meeting here on Wednesday, said the project had been cleared by the Provincial Development Working Party.
The project would facilitate 12 public and 11 private sectors' medical/dental colleges besides 111 secondary care hospitals of the province, offering them diploma, MD, MS, M.Phil and Ph.D. courses. It is for the first time that PGMI would be getting its own building, as previously, after its establishment in 1974, it was housed temporarily in the KEMC building up to 1989 when it was shifted to the campus of College of Community Medicine, formerly occupied by AIMC.
He said while preparing PC-I of the PGMI's new building, the models and references of PGMI Hammersmith, London (UK), Stanford University California (USA) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi were studied and a lot of guidance was taken from the world class institutes in this field. PGMI's role is very important which can be well-judged from the fact that this institute annually catering facilities for specialisation, research work for about 718 specialist posts of DHQ, THQ hospitals in the province, 2165 MBBS doctors produced by public sector medical colleges and 720 doctors graduated from private medical colleges, he added.
