PPP and PML-N lawmakers have hailed the letter sent to President General Pervez Musharraf by eminent civil society leaders and said that uniform in politics was neither in the interest of the country nor the military.
Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi MNA, Begum Nasim Chaudhry MNA, Malik Liaquat Ali Dogar MNA of PPP and Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan MNA of PML-N said in their separate statements issued on Thursday that the country might be plunged into serious internal crisis if the military rule prolonged.
They said that non-controversial election was no longer a matter of choice, but has become imperative for the future of Pakistan in the wake of emerging geo-political realities. They said price hike, poverty, and unemployment have risen, while the rich have become richer at the cost of millions of poor.
They said that the next elections must take place under a neutral caretaker government with a level playing field for all political parties and leaders, otherwise the country would be plunged into a deep political crisis.
"At the beginning of the 21st century, even countries like Georgia, Ukraine, and Nepal have won civil freedom and democracy. Unfortunately, Pakistan and Burma remain only two countries with uniformed rulers. This tarnishes Pakistan's image in the world."
"Bush and Blair like Musharraf because he supports their policies. If Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif had bowed against the international pressure, they too, would have been their favourite. Musharraf has made Pakistan more prone towards extremism by weakening the moderate and mainstream democratic forces in the national polity," they lamented.
They further said that everyone knows that millions of bogus ID cards were in the market. In last seven years, Nadra had spent billions of rupees on computerisation of ID cards, and if CNICs were not valid for the electoral rolls then someone must answer the utility of Nadra and the funds spent on it.
