Since the privatisation of solid waste management, the entire city has emerged as garbage dumping spots at its each nook and corner. For days, garbage remains rotating on roads and streets, while the private firms have failed since their contracts with the city government for lifting and dumping garbage on hygienic basis regularly.
While city government has turned a deaf hear to the public complaints on the issue of untidiness in the city. The performances of these contractors in all 18 towns of the metropolis have exposed during recent rains when mostly garbage found sunk in the accumulated rainwater for days and caused severe stink, remained scatter over roads and streets and give them ugly and untidy look.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board failed to respond to the situation emerged during rains in line with their so-called 'rain emergency plan' and on the other the private contractors shied away from exercising their duties to tidy areas falling in their respective jurisdictions.
Since monsoon rains have started, the streets and roads are inundated with accumulated rainwater and the garbage has overflowed. The garbage spots were set up at parts of each town for non-performances of these two concerned departments.
The contracts were signed between the city government and the contractors on terms and conditions set by the city government that contractors will be bound to lift garbage from their respective towns on hygienic standards and during night hours on daily basis.
Several complaints have been lodged with city government about the non-performances of these contractors, but sadly the city government shunned to address this important issue for various reasons.
Contracts have been awarded on different rates to the contractors depending on their locations how distant they are from landfill sites and quantity of garbage produced every day in their respective towns.
Towns administrations hold contractors responsible for their apathy to sweep out garbage on regular basis, while the city government officials blame town nazims for this mess. The numb attitude of the city government has in fact made this issue more difficult for public rather than for contractors.
It has been observed that garbage lifting are being carried out during day hours and in the uncovered carriers which continuously causes severe smells from garbage spots to landfill sites.
The garbage spots located in the towns are also brining about the breeding of mosquitoes and other lethal insects due to garbage remains dumped for days.
