Public transporters were ordered to improve fitness of old and smoke emitting vehicles within two months. In case of inaction strict action will be taken against them.
City District Government Multan (CDGM) has asked the Secretary Transport Authority, Superintendent of Traffic Police, and Motor vehicle examiner to ensure that only good condition vehicles were being run in the city.
City District Nazim, Mian Faisal Mukhar also asked the transporters, drivers in a meeting to abide by the Motor Vehicle Ordinance and Traffic Laws to improve the fitness condition of the public transport. CDGM showed anger over growing traffic accidents and said that more deaths were taking place in traffic accidents than due to any other reasons. Therefore, he called for strict enforcement of traffic laws.
He questioned the transporters about the use of shining strips and said that these not only make the eyes to blink but also were sheer violation of law. The meeting was told that decision for privatising fitness certification of vehicles would be taken in the public interest.
It was informed that in entire world load rate was fixed for various types of cargo vehicles and, therefore, here as well over-loading cannot be allowed as per highway code to ensure safe journey. It was informed that the Federal Government had allocated Rs 5 billion as formula for purchase of new CNG buses had been determined.
