Sialkot district government has decided to introduce 'green rickshaw' scheme in Sialkot, Daska, Pasrur and Sambrial tehsils for reducing pollution load, District Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema said.
Talking to reporters here on Sunday, he said the launching of green rickshaw scheme would surely help reduce the smoke and noise pollution, adding that the district government would also encourage the establishment of CNG filling stations in towns.
Akmal Cheema further said the Punjab government had sanctioned Rs90 million for setting up a zone for tanneries. The step was being taken for reducing the pollution load caused by the tanneries functioning in and close to Sialkot, he said. He said the existing tanneries would be shifted to the proposed zone, adding that work on the project would be undertaken shortly.
The nazim said the district government was making adequate efforts for ensuring safe environment in this export-oriented city. Cheema disclosed that special attention had been accorded on the improvement of means of communication aiming at linking ignored and far-off areas of the district.
He said the chief minister had allocated huge amount for the widening of Sialkot-Eminabad road, and conversion of Sialkot-Gujranwala road into dual carriageway. Besides, he said the development work on mega project of Sialkot-Lahore motorway costing Rs 20 billion would be undertaken shortly, adding that completion of the project would play a pivotal role in further accelerating the pace of trade and commerce activities in the district.
