A workshop held here on Wednesday on 'Energy Conservation in Steel Sector of Pakistan' under the Engineering Development Board (EDB) has recommended that a case should be made by the government agencies for providing incentives to the industry for investment in this field.
It also underlined the importance of awareness campaign by projecting success stories of energy conservation in the media. However, the workshop decided to continue the dialogue between the government and industry for finalising energy conservation strategy. Earlier in his opening remarks CEO EDB called upon the industry to improve its competitiveness in order to survive in the changing world scenario. The CEO said that energy conservation was the main tool to achieve this goal.
A representative of Enercom informed the workshop that the industry could achieve 5 percent saving in their fuel bills by adopting energy conservation measures. He supported his thesis with the figures of the energy audit done by them in various years.
Sultan Farooq, a consultant said that the industry has to lead in the field of energy conservation by adopting certain measures rather than looking to the government for providing them targets. In this regard, he gave the example of India where the industry itself has achieved commendable target in energy conservation.
Tobias Becker representative of GTZ gave a presentation on renewable energy and energy efficiency programme. He explained that his organisation was ready to provide technical services to the steel sector for energy conservation. A sister organisation KFW can provide investment fund for this purpose.
