Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto will be the party and the masses' candidate for the prime ministerial slot, said a party spokesman on Tuesday, rejecting reports indicating she had agreed to name someone else.
In a statement here, the spokesman said that the party had nothing to do with the proposed deal, saying this arrangement could have been made easily in 2000, but the PPP would never compromise on its principles.
"No one can bar anybody from participation in the electoral process and it is the people of Pakistan who have to decide who should form the government," the spokesman contended. President General Pervez Musharraf had asserted last week that both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif would not be permitted to return and take part in the next general elections.
He vehemently rejected reports that the party leadership was considering other names to run for the slot of prime minister, agreeing to President Musharraf's demand.
The PPP, he said, was committed to transforming Pakistan into an enlightened state in accordance with the vision of Quaid-e-Azam and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
