The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has asked the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) to explore the possibility of allowing taxpayers to deposit tax through the "Kiosk project".
Sources told this correspondent on Friday that the Nadra had floated a proposal to allow the taxpayers to deposit the tax through the ATM machines presently accepting utility bills. The taxpayers would be allowed to feed the National Tax Number (NTN) into the machines used under the project and the taxpayer would be permitted to deposit the due amount of tax.
The sources said that the NTN would be used as a unique identifier number for depositing the tax under the proposed project. In this way, the taxpayer would not be required to go to banks for manually depositing the challan forms. Currently, the project is at an initial stage and there is a need of more meetings between these two government departments to implement the proposal. It may be recalled that the project has been designed to save public from ending long queues.
