Closing stock market indices
Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares closed higher but below fresh five-year highs as Wall Street weakness took the wind out of an earlier rally fuelled by Ericsson and by take-over talk in the airline and property sectors.
Iberia rose 1.3 percent on renewed market rumours about a possible bid by British Airways, while UK property firm Hammerson also gained 2.6 percent on resurging bid speculation. Shares in Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus, which has gained 30 percent in the past six weeks, failed to sustain its prolonged take-over-fuelled rally.

JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: Resource stocks like gold producer AngloGold Ashanti lifted South African stocks to another record peak on optimism for further gains in metals prices and more weakening of the rand.
