Here is how major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European shares closed higher but below fresh five-year highs as Wall Street weakness took the wind out of an earlier rally fuelled by Ericsson and by take-over talk in the airline and property sectors.
Iberia rose 1.3 percent on renewed market rumours about a possible bid by British Airways, while UK property firm Hammerson also gained 2.6 percent on resurging bid speculation. Shares in Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus, which has gained 30 percent in the past six weeks, failed to sustain its prolonged take-over-fuelled rally.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 6,202.82 points, up 25.4 or 0.41 percent, 29.14 points higher on the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5,375.35 points, up 15.61 or 0.29 percent, up 22.12 points since October 13.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8,643.02 points, up 22.34 or 0.26 percent, down 8.12 points from last Friday.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 30,250 points, up 45 or 0.15 percent, a gain of 49 points over the week.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Australian shares rose nearly one percent to a fresh five-month high, led by gains in top miners and in banks, while John Fairfax raced to a six-year high after News Corp took a stake in the newspaper publisher. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 50.1 points, or 0.95 percent, to a new five-month high of 5,335.4, gaining 0.9 percent or 45.4 points on the week.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: Resource stocks like gold producer AngloGold Ashanti lifted South African stocks to another record peak on optimism for further gains in metals prices and more weakening of the rand. The All-share index closed at 23,337.66 points, up 82.76 or 0.36 percent, adding 497.36 points since last Friday. The All Gold index closed at 2,808.92 points, up 48.68 or 1.76 percent, a rise of 37.2 points from last week, while the Industrial index closed at 15,686.19 points, up 48.16 or 0.31 percent, up 273.81 points from seven days ago.
